The Delaware County Sheriff’s Office is beginning a hiring process to compile a list of candidates for the position of Merit Deputy. Once completed that hiring list will be used to fill current and future vacancies for a period of up to two years.

Merit Deputies are responsible for detecting, investigating, and deterring criminal activity, conducting motorized and foot patrol, enforcing criminal and traffic law, investigating vehicle collisions, providing first aid, directing traffic, utilizing radio and computer systems, and acting as leaders in the community

The Delaware County Sheriff’s Office offers competitive pay, medical, dental, and optical insurance, a health clinic, great benefits, modern equipment, quality training, advancement opportunities and a variety of specialized units. In addition to base salary deputies may receive pay incentives for participation in specialized units, military service or educational achievement, and an annual uniform allowance.

Applicants must be 21 years of age at the time of appointment, complete the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy’s physical fitness test with exit standards, and must pass a written test, criminal background investigation, psychological testing, and credit investigation.

Following a conditional offer of employment applicants must complete the 15 week Indiana Law Enforcement Academy in Plainfield, Indiana, and the Delaware County Sheriff’s Office’s Field Training program.

Completion of the online application registers the applicant for the physical agility and written testing which will be conducted on Sunday, February 2nd. More information will be emailed to the applicant with reporting instructions for the testing once the online application has closed.
